About this position
NTNU (Norwegian University of Science and Technology) is advertising a PhD Candidate in Unified Autonomy across Robot Configurations at the Department of Engineering Cybernetics in Trondheim, Norway.
The project sits in the area of robotics, embodied AI, autonomy, control systems, robot perception, navigation, machine learning, and foundation models. The research aims to develop a shared autonomy architecture that can generalize across aerial, ground, and aquatic robots, with emphasis on onboard implementable methods, robot world models, and experimental field evaluation.
The PhD candidate will be supervised by Professor Kostas Alexis and will work with the Autonomous Robots Lab as part of the newly funded Norwegian Centre for Embodied AI. The post is embedded in a national research effort focused on physical AI and the co-design of perception, action, learning, and robot morphology.
Eligibility highlights: applicants should hold a Master's degree in cybernetics, control systems, or an equivalent field, with strong training in robotics, computer vision, or machine learning. A strong academic record is required, including at least a B average or equivalent. Preferred experience includes robot perception and navigation, modern machine learning, C++ and Python, ROS, simulators, and real-world robotic systems.
Funding and conditions: the position is a 3-year PhD appointment with a gross salary normally from NOK 550,800 per year, depending on qualifications and seniority. The position is conditional on external funding.
