About this position

The Vrije Universiteit Brussel (VUB) invites applications for a PhD position focused on laser dynamics for fiber sensor interrogation, based in the Faculty of Engineering, Department of Applied Physics and Photonics. This opportunity is part of the LADYBIRD project, funded by the Research Foundation of Flanders (FWO), and will be hosted within the Brussels Photonics (B-PHOT) research group, renowned for its expertise in fundamental and applied photonics research.

The doctoral project aims to advance the detection of ultrasonic guided waves using optical fibers, a technology with significant potential for structural health monitoring in aerospace, civil engineering, and biomedical applications. The research will involve constructing an experimental setup for generating ultrasonic guided waves, exploring innovative strategies for interrogating optical fibers via laser dynamics, and benchmarking these approaches against established techniques to enhance sensitivity and speed. Collaboration with another doctoral researcher will foster synergistic innovation in fiber sensor architecture.

B-PHOT, chaired by Prof. H. Thienpont, comprises over 45 internationally recognized researchers and covers the full research cycle from modeling and fabrication to characterization and proof-of-concept. The group has developed substantial expertise in optical fiber sensing, semiconductor laser design, nonlinear dynamics, and chaos-based applications, offering a multidisciplinary environment for the successful candidate.

Applicants should possess a master’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Physics, Photonics, Applied Mathematics, or a related field. Candidates nearing completion of their master’s may apply if they provide proof of registration and meet diploma requirements before starting. Essential qualifications include a strong interest in photonic systems and light technology, proficiency in English (CEFR C1 or equivalent), and the ability to work independently and collaboratively. Experience with photonics, laser physics, nonlinear dynamics, signal processing, programming (Matlab, Python), numerical simulation, and experimental optical setups is highly valued. Training can be arranged in the first year if needed.

The position offers a full-time PhD scholarship for 12 months, extendable up to 48 months based on annual evaluations. The grant is linked to government scales and includes numerous benefits: telework allowance, hospitalisation insurance, full reimbursement for public transport, campus meal discounts, sports facilities, nursery discounts, and more. The workplace is the Brussels Humanities, Sciences & Engineering Campus (Elsene), with a planned start date of 1 October 2026.

VUB is committed to diversity, equality, and inclusion, reflecting the society it serves. Candidates must meet VUB residence and permit requirements and endorse the university’s educational vision. The application deadline is 15 August 2026. To apply, submit your CV, motivation letter, and diploma (not required for VUB alumni) via jobs.vub.be. The selection process includes an initial review and a job interview. For job content inquiries, contact Dr. Martin Virte at [email protected].
