About this position
PhD position at Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e) in catalytic upgrading of lignin-derived phenolics to aromatics.
This project sits at the interface of heterogeneous catalysis, sustainable chemistry, chemical engineering, and reaction engineering. You will work on converting depolymerized lignin streams into valuable aromatics and specialty chemicals, helping to develop circular routes for renewable carbon in the chemical industry.
The research focuses on selective demethoxylation and trans-alkylation of alkylmethoxyphenols using advanced bifunctional catalysts. You will design and run catalytic experiments in continuous-flow reactors, evaluate activity, selectivity, and stability, and analyze liquid- and gas-phase products to understand reaction pathways and process efficiency. The project combines model compounds with real lignin-derived feeds and includes systematic optimization of feed composition and operating conditions. A major theme is catalyst deactivation and regeneration, aiming to improve catalyst lifetime and process robustness.
The project is part of the HyFine collaborative research program, involving academic and industrial partners, so the role offers exposure to a broader consortium environment and real-world lignin valorization challenges.
Eligibility highlights include a master’s degree in chemical engineering, chemistry, or a related field, strong motivation for catalysis and sustainable chemistry, and fluent English at C1 level. Experience with catalyst synthesis, catalytic testing, or analytical methods is advantageous.
Funding and conditions: the appointment is full-time for four years, with an intermediate assessment after nine months. The salary follows the Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities, scale P, with a gross monthly range of approximately €3,204 to €4,051, plus a year-end bonus and vacation pay. Teaching duties are included at a limited level during the appointment.
Application deadline: 2026-08-15. Apply online with a cover letter, CV including publications, and the contact information of three references. Applications sent by email or post will not be processed.
