This doctoral position is part of a joint research project led by Dr Javier Montenegro García at the Universidade de Santiago de Compostela (USC) and Dr Mª Luz Couce Pico at the Instituto de Investigación Sanitaria de Santiago de Compostela (IDIS). The project focuses on the design and evaluation of non-viral vectors and delivery strategies for nucleic acids and proteins aimed at treating paediatric rare diseases, including conditions such as lysosomal storage diseases.

The successful candidate will work in a multidisciplinary environment at the interface of chemistry, pharmacy, and medicine. Research activities include the design of new non-viral vectors and nanoparticle formulations, delivery of mRNA and plasmid DNA, work with modified proteins, electrophoresis, RNA production, PCR and plasmid purification, in vitro and ex vivo delivery studies in cells including primary patient cells, biodistribution studies using IVIS, and in vivo evaluation of efficacy and toxicity in an animal model of a rare disease. The position also includes scientific writing, group meetings, and dissemination activities.

Eligibility: Applicants should hold a degree and a Master’s degree (or equivalent) in Biology, Pharmacy, Biochemistry, Biotechnology, Chemistry, or a related discipline. A strong academic record is expected, and experience in cell culture, cytotoxicity or permeability studies, interest in animal models, and English at B2 level or above will be considered positively.

Contract and timeline: This is a full-time temporary PhD position (37 hours/week). The planned starting date is 1 February 2027. Applications close on 31 October 2026 at 23:59 (Europe/Madrid).
