About this position
MSCA Doctoral Researcher / Doctoral Candidate opportunity at Tampere University in the DETECTIVE Horizon Europe Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions Doctoral Network.
The project focuses on virology, enteroviruses, population immunity, epidemiology, public health surveillance, and predictive modelling. The selected doctoral researcher will work on Work Package 2 and investigate how enterovirus circulation and immunity change across age groups, birth cohorts, and calendar periods, and how these patterns may predict epidemic emergence.
Research activities include longitudinal serum analysis, neutralizing antibody analyses, integration of healthcare surveillance and wastewater monitoring, and development/validation of epidemic-risk models using unique Finnish DIPP longitudinal samples and historical epidemic data. Supervisory team: Adj. Professor Sami Oikarinen and Dr. Jutta Laiho, with additional mentoring from Prof. Heikki Hyöty (Tampere University), Dr. Sarah Kempster (MHRA), and Prof. Nicholas Grassly (Imperial College London).
Eligibility highlights: relevant Master’s degree in biomedical sciences, bioinformatics, microbiology, virology, immunology, epidemiology, or related field; experience with molecular technologies and bioinformatics is an advantage; strong English communication skills; motivation for data science, machine learning, and AI; and compliance with the MSCA mobility rule (limited residence/activity in Finland during the prior 36 months).

Applicants must have a relevant Master’s degree in biomedical sciences, bioinformatics, microbiology, virology, immunology, epidemiology, or a related field, completed before the start date. Experience with molecular technologies and bioinformatics is an advantage. Strong motivation to develop expertise in data science, including machine learning and artificial intelligence, is expected, along with excellent oral and written English communication skills, interest in self-development, and ability to work in a multidisciplinary research environment. Under the MSCA mobility rule, applicants must not have resided or carried out their main activity in Finland for more than 12 months during the 36 months immediately preceding 1 March 2027.
