About this position
PhD fellowship at the University of Copenhagen in sustainable cropping systems, with a project on faba bean/cereal intercropping, belowground interactions, nitrogen dynamics, and biological nitrogen fixation.
The position is hosted by the Department of Plant and Environmental Sciences in the Belowground Crop Ecology research group, led by Associate Professor Dorte Bodin Dresbøll. The group works on resilient and sustainable cropping systems, root development and function, nutrient acquisition, root exudation, grain legumes, forage legumes, and cereals. The project is part of the N2CROP centre for legume innovation, funded by the Novo Nordisk Foundation, and involves collaboration with Aarhus University, the Technical University of Denmark, the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences, and La Trobe University.
Research activities include field trials and rhizotube experiments, with collaboration in Uppsala on similar field experiments. The work will examine above- and belowground complementarity and competition, nitrogen transfer between species, rhizobium strain effects on fixation, and modelling of intercropping systems.
Applicants should have a master’s degree equivalent in a relevant field such as agronomy, biology, or root science. Helpful experience includes root development and function, grain legume production, intercropping, crop competition, biological nitrogen fixation, greenhouse studies, and/or field studies. Good language skills are requested.
The PhD is full-time for up to 3 years. Employment is conditional on enrolment in the PhD School at SCIENCE, University of Copenhagen. Salary follows the Danish state academic agreement. Application deadline: 1 November 2027, 23:59 GMT+1.
