About this position

PhD fellowship(s) in Human-Computer Interaction at the University of Copenhagen, within the Section on Human-Centred Computing, Department of Computer Science, Faculty of Science.

The project is part of the Villum Investigator center TRACTION: Theoretical Research in Human-computer Interaction, led by Professor Kasper Hornbæk. The research focus is on understanding and advancing the use of theory in the evaluation and design of interactive systems, including theory-driven work on useful and usable computer systems, AI, extended reality (XR), social media, and other interactive technologies.

Applicants are sought from Human-Computer Interaction and related backgrounds such as computer science, psychology, or design research. Strong candidates may have experience with theories such as self-determination theory, activity theory, or theory of planned behavior, or with using LLMs/NLP to study or develop theory. Evidence of research ability, such as a thesis, publication, or project portfolio, is valued, along with strong recommendations and intellectual humility.

Two PhD routes are described: a regular 5+3 PhD for applicants with a relevant master’s degree, and an integrated 3+5 MSc and PhD route for applicants with a relevant bachelor’s degree who are enrolled in or eligible for the faculty’s MSc in Computer Science. The position is full time. The regular PhD lasts up to 3 years; the integrated route lasts up to 5 years.

Funding details for the integrated route include partial support through 48 SU portions plus salary for work (teaching, supervision, etc.) totaling 150 hours per year until the MSc is completed, followed by a salary-earning PhD scholarship for the remaining two years. The call is part of a second wave of hiring for up to four junior researchers at PhD and postdoctoral levels in the TRACTION center.

Application deadline: 2026-12-01. Apply online and submit a motivation letter, a two-page outline of your interest in theory and ideas for working with theory, CV, diplomas/transcripts, publication list, and up to three reference letters or referee contacts.
