PhD Funding Opportunity: BIO-NEXUS Project at Tshwane University of Technology.

This funded PhD project focuses on chemistry, chemical engineering, and environmental science, with related interests in materials science and sustainability. The project title is Data-driven optimisation of integrated engineered biochars in Sub-Saharan Africa for sustainable energy, food, water and health nexus.

The research addresses urgent challenges in Sub-Saharan Africa, including poverty, food security, water access, energy, and health. The core idea is to investigate engineered biochar made from plant waste as a sustainable solution that can support multiple development goals at once.

As a PhD student, you may conduct lab experiments to synthesize and optimize biochar and biochar-infused nanocomposites, apply biochar for water purification, food production, and energy, and assess commercial biochar technologies, carbon neutrality, and economic and health impacts. The project also includes data modeling, interviews, and meta-analysis to optimize applications for the Sub-Saharan Africa context.
