About this position

PhD opportunity in 5G/6G-enabled healthcare systems at the Luxembourg Institute of Science and Technology (LIST), Belval, Luxembourg.

This opening is for a PhD candidate to join the DISCO Research Group and contribute to a European research project focused on how next-generation connectivity can support healthcare services and emergency response in clinical environments.

The research topic combines 5G/6G technologies, IoT, wearable devices, edge/cloud computing, distributed systems, and web/mobile application development. The PhD work includes prototyping and experimentally validating architectures and services for demanding healthcare use cases such as emergency care, remote medical support, connected clinical workflows, and data-driven healthcare services.

Students will work on integrating physiological sensors, smartwatches, and connected medical devices as data sources, developing middleware and end-user software, collecting and analyzing experimental data, and evaluating performance indicators such as latency, reliability, availability, resilience, throughput, service continuity, and quality of service. There is also scope for selected network digital twin components.

Eligibility highlights: a Master’s degree or equivalent in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Telecommunications, Electrical Engineering, Network Engineering, Digital Health Technologies, or a related field; strong programming/scripting skills (preferably Python); experience in software development and web/mobile apps is a strong asset; background in mobile networks, IoT, wearable devices, edge/cloud computing, or digital health is advantageous. Fluency in English is required, French is also expected, and a B2 English certificate is mandatory unless the master’s degree was fully taught in English.

Funding and conditions: the position is a 36-month fixed-term PhD contract at LIST. Benefits include paid annual leave, public holidays, a 13th-month salary, statutory health insurance, flexible working hours, and a home-working policy. However, university enrollment fees at the University of Luxembourg (currently 400 EUR per semester) must be covered by the successful applicant, and the candidate must self-register at the university.

Application: apply online via the HR system with a motivation letter and CV. Applications are reviewed continuously until the position is filled.
