About this position
This PhD position at the University of Twente offers an exciting opportunity to join a research team focused on unraveling the mechanisms of cancer cell intravasation—a critical step in metastasis. The project is part of the ERC-AdG funded 'Intrap' initiative, which aims to systematically investigate how mechanical cues such as stiffness, geometry, and adhesive interactions influence the ability of cancer cells to penetrate blood vessel walls and spread throughout the body.
As a PhD candidate, you will contribute to the development and experimental analysis of advanced microphysiological models using a novel microfluidic platform. This platform features a multi-chip architecture for in vitro testing, allowing precise control of blood vessel geometry and permeability, as well as the mechanical properties of the surrounding extracellular matrix. You will create sophisticated 3D cell cultures, engineer cell and matrix properties through biochemical and RNA treatments, and utilize live cell microscopy—including the development of live-cell reporters—to directly observe the intravasation process.
The research is highly interdisciplinary, combining elements of biomedical engineering, cell biology, and biophysical analysis. The insights gained from this work are expected to expand scientific knowledge of metastasis and may contribute to the development of innovative cancer therapies targeting the mechanical properties of cells, matrices, or blood vessels.
Applicants should hold a Master’s degree in biomedical engineering, biology, medical science, or a related discipline. Experience with cell culture, microfluidics, live cell microscopy, or biophysical analysis is highly desirable. Strong motivation for interdisciplinary research and good communication skills are expected. Proficiency in English is required.
To apply, visit the AcademicTransfer portal and submit your CV, motivation letter, and academic transcripts. The position offers a stimulating research environment and the opportunity to work on cutting-edge cancer research with potential real-world impact.
