About this position

PhD opportunity at Amsterdam UMC in AI-based cardiovascular image analysis and modeling, based in Amsterdam, Netherlands.

This project sits at the intersection of biomedical engineering, computer science, physics, and medical science. The research focuses on improving the diagnosis and treatment of coronary artery disease by combining cardiovascular imaging, generative AI, and computational modeling to build probabilistic digital twins of coronary arteries.

You will work within the Quantitative Healthcare Analysis (qurAI) group in close collaboration with the CARA Lab and clinical partners in the Netherlands and abroad. The work involves large multi-center clinical datasets and aims to translate advanced computational methods into clinically relevant tools for catheterization procedures and physiology-guided treatment decisions.

Research topics include uncertainty-aware 3D reconstruction from 2D X-ray angiography, deep generative models, latent diffusion models, implicit neural representations, flow matching, physics-informed neural networks, graph-based neural operators, and fast estimation of coronary hemodynamics such as velocity, pressure, and wall shear stress.

Eligibility highlights: MSc in biomedical engineering, applied mathematics, computer science, physics, or a related field; strong Python and PyTorch skills preferred; experience or interest in medical image analysis, generative modeling, geometric deep learning, or physics-informed machine learning; strong teamwork and English communication skills. Experience with cardiovascular imaging or computational fluid dynamics is an advantage.

Funding and contract: This is a paid PhD employment position at Amsterdam UMC Research BV for 4 years total, starting with a 1-year contract and extension based on performance. Salary is €3,217 to €4,077 gross per month for full-time work, plus an end-of-year bonus and standard employment benefits.

Deadline: 30 August 2026, 21:59 UTC. Applications are reviewed continuously, so early submission is recommended.
