About this position

Applications are open for a CSIRO Industry PhD (iPhD) Scholarship at Adelaide University in the area of AI-driven sensemaking and Multi-Detector Fusion for Attributing and Detecting Synthetic Media.

This PhD project focuses on developing new machine learning and AI methods for detecting, attributing, and interpreting synthetic media across images, text, speech, and video. The research aims to improve the detection of deepfakes and AI-generated content by fusing outputs from multiple detectors and using deeper meta-knowledge such as model confidence and internal features. The project has applications in national security, journalism, social media platforms, and digital forensics.

The supervisory team includes Professor Javen Qinfeng Shi (Responsible AI Research Centre / Adelaide University), Dr Sharif Abuadbba and Dr Kristen Moore (CSIRO Data61), and Dr Gareth Parker and Dr Anee Azim (Lockheed Martin Australia).

Eligibility highlights: applicants must be Australian citizens, permanent residents, or New Zealand citizens; meet Adelaide University PhD admission and English language requirements; enrol as a full-time PhD student; and complete CSIRO onboarding, including mandatory government background checks. Strong programming skills (especially Python and C++), independent research ability, problem-solving, attention to detail, and strong communication skills are preferred.

The opportunity is open until filled. For more information and to apply, use the application link provided. Project enquiries can be directed to Dr Sharif Abuadbba or Dr Kristen Moore, and application enquiries to [email protected].
