About this position

Utrecht University is advertising a PhD position in analytical chemistry within the Analytical Glycoscience Group at the Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences, Faculty of Science. The project focuses on developing advanced analytical methodologies to understand the structural complexity and function of glycans and glycopeptides.

The research uses advanced instrumentation such as 2D-LC, CE, and multiple ion mobility-mass spectrometry (IM-MS) platforms. The work aims to improve structural identification and quantification of glycans in complex biological samples, including cell surfaces and tissue sections, and to explore gas-phase conformations, fragmentation methods, and calibration techniques for collision cross-sections (CCS).

This PhD is highly relevant to students interested in analytical chemistry, glycoscience, mass spectrometry, liquid chromatography, biological analysis, and interdisciplinary research at the interface of chemistry, biology, and pharmaceutical sciences. Application areas include biotherapeutics, functional foods, diagnostic tests for diseases, and insights into viral mechanisms.

The successful candidate should have a Master's degree in analytical chemistry or a related field, practical experience with LC/IM/MS instrumentation, strong interest in method development, and good English communication skills. Experience with glycoscience or ion mobility spectrometry is a plus.

The position is initially for 18 months and can be extended to a total of four years after positive assessment. Funding includes a gross monthly salary starting at €3,059 and rising to €3,881, plus holiday pay, year-end bonus, pension, and other employment benefits.

The application deadline is 27 May 2026. Applicants should apply through the Utrecht University vacancy page and include a motivation letter, CV, and contact details for at least two references.
