PhD in Analytical Chemistry and Glycoscience at Utrecht University
Utrecht University is advertising a
PhD position in analytical chemistry
within the
Analytical Glycoscience Group
at the
Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences
, Faculty of Science. The project focuses on developing advanced analytical methodologies to understand the structural complexity and function of
glycans
and
glycopeptides
.
The research uses advanced instrumentation such as
2D-LC
,
CE
, and multiple
ion mobility-mass spectrometry (IM-MS)
platforms. The work aims to improve structural identification and quantification of glycans in complex biological samples, including cell surfaces and tissue sections, and to explore gas-phase conformations, fragmentation methods, and calibration techniques for collision cross-sections (CCS).
This PhD is highly relevant to students interested in
analytical chemistry
,
glycoscience
,
mass spectrometry
,
liquid chromatography
,
biological analysis
, and interdisciplinary research at the interface of chemistry, biology, and pharmaceutical sciences. Application areas include
biotherapeutics
,
functional foods
,
diagnostic tests for diseases
, and insights into
viral mechanisms
.
The successful candidate should have a
Master's degree
in analytical chemistry or a related field, practical experience with LC/IM/MS instrumentation, strong interest in method development, and good English communication skills. Experience with glycoscience or ion mobility spectrometry is a plus.
The position is initially for
18 months
and can be extended to a total of
four years
after positive assessment. Funding includes a gross monthly salary starting at
€3,059
and rising to
€3,881
