About this position

The Swierk Organismal Ecology Lab in the Department of Biological Sciences at Binghamton University (SUNY) is recruiting 1-2 PhD students for Fall 2027 or Spring 2028 in animal communication, reptile ecology, and respiratory adaptations in Neotropical lizards.

The lab studies the function, evolution, and mechanisms of traits linked to communication, reproduction, and predator avoidance, with projects focused on animal body coloration as a dynamic signal and on specialized antipredator adaptations, including the morphology, behavior, and respiratory physiology of rebreathing in semi-aquatic anoles. The work uses Neotropical anoles as a study system and includes field research in the Neotropics and the Northeastern USA.

Applicants should have a BA/BS in a related field, relevant research experience, strong scientific writing and communication skills, and be motivated, independent, and collaborative. Preferred experience includes strong quantitative/statistical skills, tropical field research, animal behavior, herpetology, and an MS degree. Students should be willing to spend 2-3 summer months per year at Neotropical field stations and are encouraged to pursue external fellowships such as NSF GRFP.
