About this position

PhD opportunity at the University of Bath in the GW4 BioMed3 MRC Doctoral Landscape Programme (DLP): Reprogramming Antibodies: Novel Chemical Re-bridging to Overcome Immune Resistance in the Tumour Microenvironment.

This competition-funded project sits at the interface of biochemistry, organic chemistry, immunology, cancer biology, structural biology, and pharmaceutical chemistry. The research asks whether chemically re-engineering antibody internal bridges can improve binding to sparse tumour targets while reducing unwanted immune-cell recruitment that can undermine anti-tumour responses.

You will synthesise and characterise modified antibodies, test their flexibility and binding behaviour, and collaborate with Prof Awen Gallimore’s group at Cardiff University to evaluate them in tumour-like models containing both cancer and immune cells. If results are promising, the strongest candidates may progress to animal models of cancer.

The project is part of a wider GW4 partnership involving the Universities of Bath, Bristol, Cardiff, and Exeter, with access to shared training and specialist facilities, including Cardiff’s Systems Immunity Research Institute. The specific antibody and immune pathway are flexible and will be developed with the supervisory team.

Eligibility: applicants should have, or expect to obtain, a first or upper second-class honours degree (or equivalent) in medical sciences, computing, mathematics, or the physical sciences. A lower second-class degree may be considered with a Merit or above at master’s level. Non-UK applicants must meet Bath’s English language requirements.

Funding: 4-year studentship covering tuition fees, a stipend of £21,805 per year for 2026/27, and up to £5,000 per year for research training and support. Home and international students may apply, but international awards are capped at 30% and do not cover visa or healthcare surcharge costs.

Deadline: applications close at 17:00 GMT on 21 October 2026. The programme may close early if application volume is very high.

What's required

Applicants must have obtained, or be about to obtain, a first or upper second-class UK honours degree, or equivalent qualifications gained outside the UK, in an appropriate area of medical sciences, computing, mathematics or the physical sciences. Applicants with a lower second-class degree will only be considered if they have a Merit or above in a master’s degree. Academic qualifications are considered alongside significant relevant non-academic experience. Non-UK applicants must also meet the English language entry requirements of the University of Bath.

How to apply

Submit a formal application directly to the GW4 BioMed3 DLP online application form. You may apply for up to two projects and only one application per candidate. Do not apply to the University of Bath at this stage; Bath study applications are only required if you later receive an offer of funding.
