About this position
PhD opportunity at the University of Bath in the Department of Psychology on anxiety-related attention bias, virtual reality (VR), attention bias modification (ABM), EEG, eye-tracking, and autonomic measures.
The project is part of the GW4 BioMed3 MRC Doctoral Landscape Programme (DLP), which offers up to 17 funded studentships for entry in September 2026. The work is supervised by Dr Alexandra Voinescu, Dr Ali Khatibi, Professor Edmund Keogh, and Professor Neil Vaughan.
Research focus: how anxiety-related attentional mechanisms operate in realistic, immersive settings such as a driving simulator and VR attention tasks, and whether VR-based ABM can modify threat-related attention patterns to reduce anxiety and improve functioning. The project includes a systematic review, experimental VR studies, threat-bias assessment, and development/evaluation of an immersive intervention.
Funding: a 4-year studentship covering tuition fees, an annual stipend, and research training/support funding. The post is open to Home and International students, though international funding is limited and does not cover visa or healthcare surcharge costs.
Eligibility: applicants should have, or expect to obtain, a first or upper second-class degree in medical sciences, computing, mathematics, or the physical sciences; a lower second-class degree is acceptable only with a Merit or above at master's level. Non-UK applicants must meet Bath's English language requirements.
Deadline: 21 October 2026 at 17:00 GMT. Apply through the GW4 BioMed3 DLP online application form; you may apply for up to two projects. Informal enquiries can be sent to [email protected].
