About this position
PhD opportunity at Aalborg University in Artificial Intelligence, Digital Methods and Social Science. This is a 3-year, full-time, fully funded PhD position in the Department of Society and Politics, Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities, starting on 15 September 2026 or soon thereafter.
The project sits at the intersection of AI, computational social science, and digital methods. The successful candidate will develop an independent research project using methods such as machine learning, computational text analysis, network analysis, large language models, web scraping, platform-based data collection, and other advanced digital approaches. The department welcomes projects addressing national or international societal challenges and encourages work that combines computational techniques with more classical social science methods.
Applicants should have a strong background in a social science discipline represented at the department, such as political science, sociology, social work, history, criminology, or IT-management. Hands-on experience with AI, coding in Python or R, APIs, scraping, model building, or data cleaning/management is expected. A Master’s degree is required, and applicants must have achieved at least grade 10 in the Danish grading system or equivalent for the Master’s thesis/final exam. If the thesis will be written in English and the applicant does not meet the exemption criteria, an English test score is required (IELTS 7, TOEFL iBT 100, or TOEFL paper-based 600).
The application must include an application letter, CV, bachelor’s and master’s diplomas with grades, and a project description of approximately 5 pages. The project description should outline research questions, theoretical considerations, methodology, relevant literature, and a timeline. The deadline is 09 August 2026. Applications are submitted through Aalborg University’s recruitment system.
This position includes PhD training, teaching and dissemination experience, and an external research stay outside Aalborg University, preferably 3–6 months at a foreign research institution. Salary and employment terms follow the Danish collective agreement.
