About this position

PhD opportunity at the University of Southampton in Artificial Medical Intelligence for personalised and preventive healthcare.

This project sits at the intersection of artificial intelligence, medical imaging, machine learning, computer vision, multimodal health data, and longitudinal modelling. The research aims to build trustworthy, causal, and data-driven AI methods that can model individual health trajectories, identify disease risk earlier, predict future outcomes, and support personalised prevention.

Key themes include personalised risk modelling, disease progression prediction, multimodal representation learning, longitudinal machine learning, causal and counterfactual reasoning, generative modelling, digital twins, uncertainty estimation, robustness, interpretability, and rigorous evaluation of personalised predictions.

You will join the Advanced Technologies for Translational AI Research (ATTAR) Lab and work in a collaborative environment with PhD students, postdoctoral researchers, and academic and clinical collaborators. Training includes deep learning, computer vision, multimodal learning, causal inference, generative modelling, trustworthy AI, scientific communication, reproducible research, high-performance computing, and publication skills.

Eligibility: UK 2:1 honours degree or international equivalent in computer science, artificial intelligence, engineering, mathematics, or a related quantitative discipline. Strong programming, mathematical, and analytical skills are essential; experience in machine learning, deep learning, computer vision, or data science is highly desirable.

Funding: Competition-funded PhD project with several funding routes for UK and international students. Horizon Europe fee waivers may cover the difference between overseas and UK fees for qualifying students. Presidential Bursaries and school studentships may cover fees and, in some cases, a living stipend.

How to apply: Submit an online application for Research study in 2027/28, Faculty of Engineering and Physical Sciences. Select full-time or part-time, search for PhD Computer Science (7089), and add the supervisor name in section 2. Include a research proposal, CV, two references, transcripts/certificates, and English language evidence if needed.

Deadline: 31 July 2027. Funding is awarded on a rolling basis, so early application is recommended.
