About this position
ETH Zurich’s Laboratory of Energy Science and Engineering (LESE) is advertising a PhD position in Atomic-Scale Structure–Function Relationships in Separation Materials for Sustainable Processes. The project is funded by NCCR Separations and is centered on understanding how atomic structure controls the performance of separation materials for CO₂ capture and the recovery of critical elements such as lithium and cobalt from complex waste streams.
The research is highly interdisciplinary and combines materials synthesis, advanced structural and spectroscopic characterization, and computational/process-oriented thinking. Key techniques include X-ray Absorption Spectroscopy (XAS), X-ray total scattering with pair distribution function analysis, and vibrational spectroscopy. The goal is to connect atomic-scale mechanisms with selectivity, capacity, and stability, and to derive rational design principles for improved separation materials.
The position is carried out under the co-supervision of Dr. Paula Abdala and Prof. Christoph R. Müller at ETH Zurich in Zurich, Switzerland. The post is suitable for candidates with an excellent MSc in Chemical Engineering, Materials Science, Chemistry, or a related field. Experience in materials synthesis and characterization is beneficial, and the team is looking for someone with strong motivation, creativity, independence, teamwork skills, and willingness to participate in intensive experimental campaigns, including synchrotron beamtime.
This is a funded PhD opportunity. Applications must be submitted through the ETH Zurich online application portal; email or social media applications will not be considered. Required documents include a CV, motivation letter, and transcripts. The post does not state a deadline in the provided text.
Funding details
Full funding including tuition fees and living expenses is available for this position. The scholarship covers all educational costs and provides a monthly stipend.
