About this position

This PhD position at Eindhoven University of Technology focuses on behavioral and experiential modeling of inclusive neighborhood environments, specifically targeting the everyday experiences and mobility of older adults. The project is part of the ELLI (Empathic Living Labs for Inclusive Neighborhoods) initiative, a national interdisciplinary effort to understand and improve accessibility and inclusivity in urban settings for individuals with physical or cognitive vulnerabilities.

The research aims to identify and analyze physical, cognitive, social, and psychological barriers that affect how older adults navigate and interact with their neighborhoods. The candidate will employ a mix of qualitative, quantitative, and spatial methods, including behavioral observation, environmental perception studies, interviews, wearable and sensor-based data collection, spatial behavior modeling, GIS and spatial analytics, and participatory approaches. The ultimate goal is to develop behavioral and spatial models that reveal implicit accessibility barriers and inform intervention strategies at the neighborhood level.

As a PhD candidate, you will work closely with another PhD student and collaborate with researchers, municipalities, and care organizations. Responsibilities include investigating behavioral patterns, mobility trajectories, and environmental interactions, as well as publishing results in scientific journals and contributing to the interdisciplinary ELLI research community.

Applicants should have a Master’s degree in Architecture/Urban Design, Urban Studies, Human Geography, Behavioral Science, Environmental Psychology, Data Science, or a related field. Experience with spatial analysis, behavioral research methods, or data analysis is expected, and programming skills (Python, R, or similar) are advantageous. Strong analytical and communication skills, fluency in English (C1 level), and the ability to work in interdisciplinary teams are required. Fluency in Dutch is an advantage.

The position offers full-time employment for four years, with an intermediate assessment after nine months. Salary is in scale P (€3,059–€3,881/month), with a year-end bonus of 8.3% and annual vacation pay of 8%. Additional benefits include a pension scheme, paid pregnancy and maternity leave, partially paid parental leave, high-quality training programs, excellent technical infrastructure, on-campus childcare and sports facilities, commuting and home working allowances, and a tax compensation scheme (30% facility) for international candidates. The university provides unlimited access to the TU/e Student Sports Center at an affordable rate.

Eindhoven University of Technology is a leading international institution located in Brainport Eindhoven, a world-leading tech region. The Department of Built Environment emphasizes sustainability and houses a broad spectrum of disciplines, enabling integrated approaches to societal challenges.
