About this position
Doctoral Researcher in Bio-Based Construction Materials at the University of Luxembourg (Faculty of Science, Technology and Medicine, Limpertsberg Campus).
This PhD project sits at the intersection of Physics, Biology, Materials Science, Civil Engineering, and computational methods. The doctoral researcher will work in the Physics of Living Matter Group within the Climate Nexus Framework project, funded by the Luxembourg Ministry of the Environment, Climate and Biodiversity. The research aims to develop innovative bio-based construction materials and biomaterials for terrestrial, subsurface, and even space applications, with a specific focus on CCUS-conforming materials and real-life construction settings.
The work includes wet-lab experiments, microbiological assays, quantitative imaging from nanoscale to macroscale, micro- and macroscale fluidics, statistical analysis, and machine learning/computational analysis. The project also mentions collaboration with Prof. Markus Schäfer and Prof. Numa Bertola from the Department of Engineering, and broader synergies with microbiology and biotechnology experts in Luxembourg and Europe.
Eligibility highlights: a Bachelors and Masters degree in Natural Sciences, Engineering, or Technological fields; preference for graduates in materials sciences, soft/living matter, or microbial biotechnology; wet-lab and cell culture experience is a plus; quantitative imaging and image processing skills are important; programming in MATLAB and/or Python and use of Git/GitHub/GitLab are desirable; B2-level language proficiency in the language of the thesis is required.
Funding: fixed-term full-time doctoral contract for 36 months with a yearly gross salary of EUR 43,445.
How to apply: submit a CV, cover letter, and university transcripts via the online HR system. Applications by email will not be considered. Early application is encouraged because applications are processed upon receipt.
