About this position
PhD opportunity in bio-inspired autonomous navigation for quadruped robots at Lab-STICC (CNRS/ENSTA Bretagne), in collaboration with the Joint Robotics Laboratory (CNRS–AIST, Japan) and MIS, Université de Picardie Jules Verne.
The project focuses on robotics, computer vision, artificial intelligence, and bio-inspired autonomous navigation. The doctoral researcher will develop new navigation methods inspired by ants and bees, using visual familiarity to help a quadruped robot memorize and follow long routes. The work also includes designing frugal, robust, and energy-efficient vision algorithms and validating them on mobile robots and a quadruped robot in real-world environments.
Location: Brest, France, with research missions in Amiens and Tsukuba, Japan.
Funding: Fully funded PhD for 36 months, supported by ANR, with a minimum salary of €2,300 gross/month (about €1,820 net before tax).
Candidate profile: Master’s degree or engineering degree in robotics, computer science, computer vision, artificial intelligence, or a related field; strong programming and image-processing skills; interest in autonomous robotics, bio-inspired AI, and interdisciplinary international research.
Application materials: CV, motivation letter, academic transcripts, recommendation letter, and optionally a summary of relevant professional experience.
This is a strong fit for candidates interested in quadruped robots, autonomous navigation, computer vision, and bio-inspired AI in a collaborative France–Japan research setting.
