About this position
University of Cologne is advertising a PhD student (f/m/x) position in biological physics and systems biology within the Institute for Biological Physics and the Bollenbach Group. The project sits in the framework of Collaborative Research Center 1310 “Predictability in Evolution” and focuses on the evolution of antibiotic resistance in microbial systems.
The research combines molecular biology, microbiology, physics, and theoretical modeling. The successful candidate will perform evolution experiments with E. coli lab strains and clinical isolates that infect host immune cells, especially macrophages; analyze evolving bacterial populations using genome barcoding assays and next-generation sequencing; characterize molecular mechanisms underlying resistance and immune-system pressure; and develop theoretical models of resistance evolution in collaboration with theorists.
Applicants should have a very good MSc degree in evolutionary biology, biotechnology, microbiology, biological physics, or a related field. The post calls for a strong interest in interdisciplinary research between physics and biology, strong communication skills, and a high level of motivation and independence. Previous experience with mammalian cell culture, microbiology techniques, or programming is helpful but not required.
The position is part-time (65% / 25.89 hours per week), available immediately, and offered on a fixed-term contract until 31 December 2029. Salary is based on TV-L E13 if the relevant wage requirements and personal qualifications are met. The post is located in Cologne, Germany.
To apply, submit your application online through the University of Cologne job portal, including proof of the required qualifications and no photo. Use reference number Wiss2609-05. The deadline is 26 October 2026. For further inquiries, contact Dr Francesca Macaluso or Professor Dr Tobias Bollenbach by email.
