PhD in Building Technology: AI-based Timber Quality Assessment Linnaeus University in Sweden

Linnaeus University is advertising a PhD position in Building Technology with a specialisation in AI-based timber quality assessment.

The project will develop AI models and tools for the automatic, non-destructive evaluation of wood and timber products using deep learning and multimodal scanning data, including optical, laser, and CT scans. The research examines how visible and internal wood features relate to engineering and aesthetic properties, with the broader goal of improving wood resource use, enabling higher-value timber products, and supporting a greener, climate-neutral construction sector.

The successful candidate will join the Linnaeus University Centre for Competitive Timber Structures, an interdisciplinary research environment collaborating with academic and industry partners.

Location: Växjö, Sweden
Start date: 1 October 2026, or by agreement
