About this position

PhD opportunity at the University of Quebec at Rimouski (UQAR) in collaboration with a research center and an industrial partner. The project focuses on catalytic pyrolysis of non-recyclable plastic waste to produce hydrogen-rich syngas for the clean energy transition.

The research is interdisciplinary and includes chemical engineering, process engineering, reaction engineering, kinetics, transport phenomena, reactor-scale modeling, and multiphase flow simulations. The successful candidate will also work with a fast pyrolysis unit (40 tonnes/day capacity) and collaborate with industry and research partners.

Ideal applicants hold a master’s degree in Chemical Engineering, Process Engineering, Chemistry, Mechanical Engineering, or a related field. Strong preparation in reaction engineering, kinetics, and transport phenomena is expected, along with programming skills in Python and MATLAB, and experience with COMSOL or ANSYS. Prior research experience in pyrolysis or thermal decomposition is preferred. English proficiency is required; French is an asset.

Applicants must provide proof of language proficiency in English (TOEFL or IELTS) or French (recognized tests such as TEF, TCF, DELF B2+, DALF C1, or Bright Language ≥ 3.5). Application materials include a CV, academic transcripts, a cover letter with background and research interests, and two references.

Applications are reviewed starting August 27 and continue until the position is filled. Interested candidates should email their materials to Prof. Maha Bhouri at [email protected].
