About this position

PhD opening at Delft University of Technology (TU Delft), Faculty of Mechanical Engineering, in chaotic sampling for secure and sustainable networked control systems.

This theory-centric project explores how event-based control can reduce communication and energy use while making transmission timing harder to predict for external observers. The research combines control theory, nonlinear dynamics, optimization, mathematical modeling, and elements of theoretical computer science. You will study when event-based sampling becomes chaotic, how to design controller/sampler strategies that balance stability, communication rate, and timing unpredictability, and how robust these mechanisms are under disturbances and observation.

The position is supervised by Gabriel de Albuquerque Gleizer and is part of a new lab at the Delft Center for Systems and Control. Expected outcomes include theoretical results, mathematical proofs, computational algorithms, open-source software, and simulation-based validation. An experimental demonstration with a wireless lab-scale control system may be possible, but the main focus is on theory.

Eligibility highlights: an MSc in systems & control, electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, applied mathematics, physics, theoretical computer science, or a closely related field; strong mathematical ability; solid linear algebra and differential equations; scientific programming; and excellent English. Prior experience in systems and control, stability analysis, state-space methods, jump-flow systems, optimization, numerical computation, machine learning, nonlinear dynamics, event-based control, or discrete-event systems is helpful but not required.

Funding and conditions: 4-year PhD employment in principle, with salary from €3204 to €4051 gross per month depending on year, plus holiday allowance and end-of-year bonus. TU Delft also offers health insurance discounts, a monthly work costs contribution, flexible work schedules, and Graduate School support.

Deadline: 23 October 2026. Apply online and upload a CV, cover letter, one or two research-oriented documents, and BSc/MSc transcripts with grades. Email applications are not accepted.
