About this position
Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e) is offering a PhD position in Chemical and Neurogenic Haptics Using Responsive Polymer Coatings within the Vici project “Beyond sight and sound: liquid crystal polymer-based tactile interfaces for the digital age.” The project aims to move beyond conventional vibration-based touch feedback and create programmable tactile sensations such as texture, softness, adhesion, warmth, coolness, fragrance, and chemically triggered cues for future human-machine interaction.
The PhD research focuses on porous and nanostructured liquid crystal polymer coatings that can store and release active compounds on demand. These coatings will act as dynamic reservoirs, enabling controlled release and reabsorption when triggered by light, heat, or electric fields. The work will explore neurogenic, thermosensory, and olfactory molecules such as menthol, capsaicin, methyl salicylate, and other volatile compounds, with an emphasis on preventing premature leakage and achieving repeatable, localized, and safe stimulation.
In the later stages of the project, the chemical haptic functions will be combined with mechanical haptic structures, including topography changes, fibres, or suction-inspired structures. The successful candidate will work in an interdisciplinary environment and collaborate with researchers in molecular synthesis, mechanical haptics, device integration, and perception studies, while contributing to publications, conference presentations, and demonstrator devices.
The position is embedded in the Department of Chemical Engineering and Chemistry at TU/e, a research-intensive environment with strong links to high-tech industry and an international academic network. The university is located in Brainport Eindhoven, a major European technology region known for advanced manufacturing, photonics, semiconductors, and applied innovation.
Applicants should have a master’s degree or equivalent in chemical engineering, materials science, polymer chemistry, physical chemistry, soft matter, biomedical materials, controlled release systems, or surface/coating technology. Experience with polymer networks, porous materials, responsive coatings, liquid crystals, drug delivery, analytical chemistry, or spectroscopy is considered an advantage. Strong experimental skills, creativity, safety awareness, teamwork, interest in industry collaboration, and fluent English are required.
The appointment is full time for four years with an intermediate assessment after nine months. The salary follows scale P under the Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities, with a gross monthly range of €3,204 to €4,051, plus a year-end bonus and vacation allowance. Additional benefits include pension arrangements, parental leave provisions, commuting and work-from-home allowances, technical infrastructure, and access to university facilities.
The deadline for applications is 2026-08-01. Applicants must apply online and submit a cover letter, CV including publications, and the contact information for three references. The vacancy remains open until filled, and only complete applications will be prioritized.
