About this position

Leiden University is advertising a PhD in Computational Imaging for High-Throughput Applications within the Leiden Institute of Advanced Computer Science (LIACS) and the Computational Imaging and Deep Learning (CIDL) research group.

The project is part of the DUAL-IMPACT initiative and focuses on developing data-driven 3D X-ray inspection techniques for industrial quality control. The research combines computational imaging, computer vision, machine learning, inverse problems, image processing, and imaging physics. A key goal is to create combined X-ray and visible-light imaging technologies and novel volumetric representations for paired image data, then validate the methods on real-world datasets.

The successful candidate will conduct original research, publish and present scientific articles, contribute to teaching, write a dissertation, and collaborate across disciplines and with industry partners. The position is embedded in an international research environment at Leiden University, with access to a supportive institute and a strong computer science community.

Eligibility highlights: applicants should hold an MSc in Computer Science, Artificial Intelligence, or a related field; have strong experience in machine learning, computational imaging, and/or computer vision; possess excellent programming skills (preferably Python and/or C++); demonstrate strong academic writing ability; and have excellent English proficiency. Interest in real-world applications and flexibility to work on-site with project partners are also important.

Funding and conditions: this is a full-time PhD appointment initially for one year, with extension for three additional years after positive evaluation. The salary ranges from €3,204 to €4,051 gross per month, plus holiday allowance, end-of-year bonus, pension, commuting reimbursement, and other employment benefits.

Deadline: applications must be submitted by 2026-09-05. Apply online via AcademicTransfer and include a motivation letter, research statement, CV, and referee contacts.
