About this position
This PhD project at Aston University, based in the College of Health and Life Sciences, offers an exciting opportunity to advance our understanding of human visual perception through computational modelling and psychophysical experimentation. The research aims to extend the noisy energy model of contrast detection, previously developed by Dr T Meese, to a two-dimensional framework and rigorously test it against the ModelFest dataset from NASA. The project will investigate spatial filtering, feature integration, and segmentation processes in the retina, focusing on the fundamental limits and strategies of the human signal detection system.
Key objectives include developing and validating new computational models, running comparative analyses with existing models on challenging datasets, and designing novel stimuli to probe the boundaries of signal integration. The research will address critical issues such as internal noise, intrinsic uncertainty, and contrast transduction, contributing to the broader field of visual neuroscience and psychophysics.
The successful candidate will join a vibrant research environment on the Aston Campus in Birmingham, UK, and will be expected to participate in regular in-person activities. Applicants should possess strong programming and quantitative skills, with a solid background in visual perception and/or experimental psychology. Eligibility requires a First or Upper Second Class undergraduate degree (or equivalent) in a relevant subject, or a Merit or above in a relevant postgraduate Masters degree. Overseas applicants are welcome but must cover the difference between Home and Overseas tuition fees (£17,712 for 2026/7).
Applications are accepted year-round. Required documents include academic transcripts, research and personal statements, CV, references, English language evidence, and a passport copy. Interviews will be conducted online via Microsoft Teams. For further details, contact Dr T Meese at [email protected] or the Postgraduate Admissions team at [email protected].
