About this position

Chalmers University of Technology in Gothenburg is advertising a Doctoral student in coupling cold atoms to photonic integrated circuits within the Hybrid Quantum Systems Laboratory and the Division for Quantum Technology at the Department of Microtechnology and Nanoscience (MC2).

The project sits at the intersection of physics, quantum technology, photonics, nanophotonics, atomic physics, nanofabrication, and experimental quantum engineering. The research aims to build a new experimental platform to trap thousands of cold Strontium atoms near nanophotonic waveguides and use the system to explore protocols for quantum metrology, quantum simulation, and quantum computing. The work will involve laser cooling and trapping, spectroscopy, ultra-high-vacuum technology, photonic design, and nanofabrication.

The position is hosted by the Hybrid Quantum Systems Laboratory, a new lab at Chalmers with a renovated lab space and access to a state-of-the-art nanofabrication facility. The broader research environment includes the Quantum Technology Laboratory and MC2, both active in quantum physics, sensing, transduction, thermodynamics, photonics, and future electronic systems.

Eligibility highlights: applicants must hold a relevant Master's degree (or, for students educated outside Sweden, a 4-year Bachelor's degree is accepted) in Physics, Applied Physics, Nanotechnology, Photonics, Electrical Engineering, or another relevant subject. Strong written and verbal English skills are required. Experience in experimental atomic physics, optics, photonics, or nanofabrication is a merit.

Funding and terms: the doctoral position is fully funded from the start. It is a fixed-term appointment of four years, with the possibility to teach up to 20%, extending the position to five years. The starting salary is 34,550 SEK per month.
