About this position

PhD opportunity at Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e) in the Department of Chemical Engineering and Chemistry, focusing on device integration and sensing for liquid crystal polymer haptic interfaces. This project is part of the Vici initiative Beyond sight and sound: liquid crystal polymer-based tactile interfaces for the digital age, aimed at creating interactive surfaces that communicate through touch.

The PhD research centers on integrating responsive liquid crystal polymer coatings into functional haptic devices. These coatings can alter surface topography, stiffness, adhesion, or tactile output when triggered by electrical or optical signals. The goal is to build demonstrators such as tactile displays and wearable haptic systems for future applications including tactile displays, wearable navigation, prosthetics, remote communication, and immersive virtual or augmented reality.

Scientific and engineering challenges include achieving localized, addressable haptic feedback at resolutions relevant to human touch. The project will investigate driving schemes based on patterned electrodes, Joule heating, capacitive coupling, thin-film transistor backplanes, and micro-LED actuation. It will also explore the dielectric anisotropy of liquid crystal polymers for sensing touch, deformation, or force, alongside capacitive and dielectric sensing strategies.

The successful candidate will develop electrical and optical driving schemes, design and test patterned electrode systems and matrix addressing concepts, integrate coatings into wearable and display demonstrators, and evaluate response speed, spatial resolution, voltage requirements, power consumption, and durability. Collaboration is expected with other PhD candidates, postdoctoral researchers, engineers, psychologists, and external stakeholders, with publication and conference presentation opportunities.

Applicants should hold a master’s degree or equivalent in a relevant engineering or materials field such as materials science, electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, applied physics, chemical engineering, microsystems technology, soft robotics, or sensor/actuator systems. Experience in electronics, microcontrollers, PCB design, capacitive sensing, flexible electronics, optical actuation, liquid crystals, polymers, or prototyping is highly desirable. A research-oriented attitude, teamwork skills, industrial collaboration interest, teaching motivation, and fluent English at C1 level are required.

The position is full-time for four years and includes an intermediate assessment after nine months. Salary follows Dutch university scale P and includes standard benefits, training opportunities, and support services for international researchers. The vacancy remains open until filled; complete applications are prioritized.
