PhD in Diamond Nanomaterials for Quantum Sensing at the University of Eastern Finland University of Eastern Finland in Finland

The University of Eastern Finland is recruiting a Doctoral Researcher (PhD Student) in Natural Sciences and Engineering at the Department of Physics and Mathematics, Joensuu Campus, Finland.

The position is linked to the Diamond subgroup of the Nanomaterials for THz and Biophotonics Group and the Academy Research Fellow project “Interaction of Color Centers in Diamond: Towards Next-Generation Quantum Sensors” (ICONIQ). The research focuses on diamond synthesis, formation of colour centres, and the study of their optical, quantum, and sensing properties. The project aims to advance solid-state quantum sensing and quantum technologies through tailored diamond nanostructures and confocal photoluminescence-based characterization.

Responsibilities include research aligned with the project goals, optimization of synthesis and processing parameters, characterization of morphological, optical, and quantum properties, and contribution to the design and development of the optical setup and Python-based software. The role also involves data analysis, research reporting, scientific publications, conference presentations, grant applications, and research visits with collaborators in Finland and abroad.

Eligibility: applicants must be eligible for postgraduate studies and hold a Master’s degree in physics, photonics, materials science, or a related field, or an equivalent qualification that grants access to doctoral studies. Applicants must meet the admission criteria for the LUMETO doctoral programme and have good written and spoken English. Final-stage Master’s students may apply if they complete their degree by 15 October 2026.

Preferred background: strong analytical skills, research and laboratory experience, experimental optics/electronics experience, data analysis experience, and programming skills in Python or Matlab.

Funding and terms: this is a salaried temporary full-time doctoral researcher position. The starting salary is approximately EUR 2,710–2,845/month under the Finnish university salary system. The contract runs from 1 November 2026 (or as agreed) until 31 August 2030.
