About this position

PhD position at the University of Amsterdam in the Institute of Physics, within the Soft Matter cluster at the Van der Waals-Zeeman Institute for Experimental Physics. The project is about effective barriers against rising damp, combining Physics, Chemistry, Materials Science, porous media, and cultural heritage preservation.

You will investigate how chemical damp-proofing products spread, age, and polycondense in porous building materials such as limestone and sandstone. The work uses advanced experimental methods including fluorescent viscosity-sensitive probes, confocal/infrared microscopy, microfluidics, MRI, Raman/IR spectroscopy, electron microscopy, and X-ray microtomography to connect pore-scale processes with macroscale barrier performance.

Supervision is by Prof. Noushine Shahidzadeh and Prof. Hannelore Derluyn. The project is linked to TU Delft and involves stakeholders from product manufacturers, conservation agencies, building owners, and contractors. Short research stays at the DMEX Centre for X-ray Imaging in Pau, France, are foreseen for micro-CT experiments.

Eligibility: a completed MSc in Physics, Materials Science, Physical Chemistry, Chemistry, or a closely related field; strong experimental interest; good English; ability to work independently and in teams; and willingness to assist in teaching. Preferred experience includes soft matter physics, porous media, and imaging techniques.

Funding: 4-year PhD employment contract, 38 hours/week, gross monthly salary €3,204–€4,051 plus holiday and year-end allowances. The position is based in the Netherlands and may qualify for the 30% ruling for non-Dutch applicants.

Deadline: 10 October 2026. Apply online through AcademicTransfer and include CV, motivation letter, publication list (if any), two references, and BSc/MSc transcripts.
