About this position

Doctoral Researcher opportunity at the University of Luxembourg in the Faculty of Science, Technology and Medicine, within the Research Group for Building Energy and Building Services Engineering led by Prof. Dr Frank Scholzen.

The PhD project is focused on energy transition and decarbonisation of the building heating sector, with emphasis on the existing building stock. The research combines collection and analysis of real-world data with digital, physical, and data-driven modelling approaches to develop and evaluate future energy system scenarios and solutions for sustainable heating.

Students will work on topics related to building energy, numerical modelling, energy systems, and engineering sciences, and will collaborate with industrial and academic partners at national and international level. The role also includes dissemination through scientific publications and conference presentations, plus a small teaching contribution of about 1–2 contact hours per week or equivalent student supervision.

Eligibility highlights: a Master’s degree in Engineering (Energy, Mechanical, Electrical, or related field), solid background in the energy domain, and interest/skills in numerical modelling. English proficiency at C1 is required; German or French at B1 is a strong asset. For doctoral admission, applicants must also demonstrate at least B2 proficiency in the language of the thesis.

Contract details: full-time fixed-term doctoral contract for 36 months. The yearly gross salary is EUR 44,531 (full time). Location: Kirchberg Campus, Luxembourg.
