About this position
Karolinska Institutet’s Institute of Environmental Medicine (IMM) is advertising a PhD position in environmental epidemiology focused on climate change, maternal health, child health, air pollution, temperature exposure, and green environments.
The project will investigate the independent and interacting effects of heat, cold, and air pollution during pregnancy on maternal complications and early child development. Outcomes include hypertensive disorders of pregnancy (such as preeclampsia), gestational diabetes, and fetal and infant growth trajectories. The work uses large-scale administrative and clinical register data from Sweden and Belgium together with high-resolution environmental exposure data.
The doctoral student will apply advanced methods in epidemiology and biostatistics, including time-to-event analyses, case-crossover designs, multilevel models for repeated measures, distributed lag non-linear models, and interaction analyses on additive and multiplicative scales. The role includes data management, statistical analysis, interpretation, manuscript writing, and dissemination in scientific journals and conferences.
Eligibility: a master’s degree or equivalent, or at least 240 credits with 60 advanced-level credits; strong English proficiency equivalent to English B/English 6; documented knowledge of epidemiology and biostatistics; experience with epidemiological data. A background in environmental health, public health, medicine, biomedical sciences, statistics, data science, or related quantitative fields is encouraged. Experience with R, large datasets, environmental epidemiology, air pollution, temperature exposure, and advanced statistical methods is a plus.
Funding: the position is a doctoral studentship with a contractual salary for up to 4 years full-time.
How to apply: submit your application via the Varbi recruitment system. Include a personal letter, CV, degree projects and publications if any, proof of general and specific eligibility, and any other documents demonstrating relevant skills. The deadline is 2026-10-06.
