About this position

PhD opportunity at the University of Bath in the Department of Psychology on epigenetics, neuroimaging, DNA methylation, and mental health across child development.

This project is part of the GW4 BioMed3 MRC Doctoral Landscape Programme (DLP), which offers up to 17 studentships for entry in September 2026. The work is embedded in the international MIND consortium and focuses on how epigenetic patterns and structural brain variation jointly relate to outcomes such as anxiety, depression, and ADHD from infancy to adulthood.

The student will work across multi-cohort datasets and use predictive and meta-analytic approaches to assess which epigenetic and brain imaging scores are most informative, whether combining them improves prediction, and how associations change over development. Relevant study areas include bioinformatics, clinical psychology, developmental psychology, epidemiology, genetics, human genetics, molecular genetics, neuropsychology, and neuroscience.

Funding: 4-year studentship covering tuition fees, a stipend of £21,805 per annum for 2026/27, plus up to £5,000 per annum for research training and support. Home and international students may apply, but international awards are capped and do not cover visa or healthcare surcharge costs.

Eligibility: Applicants should have, or be about to obtain, a first or upper second-class degree in medical sciences, computing, mathematics, or the physical sciences. A lower second-class degree may be considered with a Merit or above at master’s level. Non-UK applicants must meet the University of Bath English language requirements.

Deadline: 21 October 2026 at 17:00 GMT. Applications may close early if demand is high.

How to apply: Submit your application through the GW4 BioMed3 DLP online form. You may apply for up to two projects and only one application per candidate. Informal enquiries can be sent to Professor Esther Walton at [email protected].
