About this position
PhD position at Delft University of Technology (TU Delft) in the Faculty of Aerospace Engineering, Operations & Environment section, focused on sustainable aviation, aircraft design, fleet allocation, network planning, schedule optimization, and simulation environments.
The project is part of the Dutch Aviation Systems Analysis Lab (DASAL), a collaboration between TU Delft and Royal NLR, supporting the Dutch aviation transition. The research will develop new methods and models that couple future aircraft concepts (including battery-powered and hydrogen aircraft) with airline fleet and schedule decisions to assess economic and climate impacts and support the airspace of the future.
Key research themes include characterizing performance differences between current and future aircraft, evaluating effects on fleet assignment and network planning, optimizing airline operations based on new aircraft capabilities, and enabling future expansion to additional optimization domains such as noise. The candidate will work in an interdisciplinary environment with PhD candidates, postdocs, NLR experts, and the Ministry of Infrastructure and Water Management.
Eligibility highlights: MSc in Aerospace Engineering, Industrial Engineering, Operations Research, Applied Mathematics, or a related field; strong Python programming and simulation experience are a plus; experience with fleet planning, airline network scheduling, and optimization methods is desirable; strong English communication and academic writing skills are required.
Funding and conditions: 4-year doctoral employment in principle, with an initial 1.5-year contract and a 2.5-year extension subject to a positive go/no-go assessment. Salary ranges from €3059 to €3881 gross per month, plus holiday allowance and end-of-year bonus. TU Delft also mentions health insurance discounts and relocation support.
Application deadline: 30 August 2026. Apply online through the TU Delft careers portal and upload CV, motivational letter, MSc diploma, and course list supplement.
