About this position
PhD opportunity at Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e), Netherlands in Forward Error Correction for Optical Quantum-Secured Networks.
This PhD is hosted by the Information and Communication Theory Lab (ICT Lab) at TU/e and is part of the EU-funded QuNEST Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions Doctoral Network. The project focuses on error-correcting codes, forward error correction (FEC), optical communications, quantum key distribution (QKD), information reconciliation, coding theory, and information theory. You will work on designing and analysing advanced FEC codes for high-throughput optical communication systems, including LDPC, polar, and spatially-coupled codes, and may also explore new code constructions for classical optical channels and nonlinear fibre transmission.
The role is especially relevant for students interested in the intersection of electrical engineering, computer science, mathematics, and physics, with applications in secure optical networks and quantum-secure communication infrastructure. The project includes cross-disciplinary training in communications, quantum physics, and photonics, plus secondments at European partner institutions such as Karlsruhe Institute of Technology and Nokia Bell Labs.
Funding and conditions: full-time PhD employment for 4 years at TU/e, with a gross base salary of €3,204–€4,051 per month (scale P), plus holiday allowance, year-end bonus, pension, and other TU/e benefits. As an MSCA Doctoral Candidate position, salary and benefits may also include an MSCA family allowance if eligible.
Eligibility highlights: applicants must hold a master’s degree or equivalent in Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, Applied Mathematics, or a related field; have a strong foundation in communication theory; and preferably some exposure to coding theory and/or information theory. Programming skills in Python, MATLAB, or C/C++ are expected. Prior experience with quantum information, quantum optics, or QKD is welcome but not required. English proficiency at B2+ level is required, and MSCA mobility/doctoral-degree rules apply.
