About this position

PhD Position: Generative AI for Smart Grids and Energy Systems at Forschungszentrum Jülich GmbH in Germany (Jülich).

This doctoral opening is part of AI.Grids, a European initiative focused on trustworthy, scalable AI solutions for future electricity networks. The project sits at the intersection of computer science, electrical engineering, physics, mathematics, and statistics, with a strong emphasis on generative AI, foundation models, physics-informed machine learning, and graph-based methods for smart grids and energy systems.

Research topics include synthetic yet realistic energy data generation, energy monitoring, forecasting, planning, uncertainty handling, privacy, interoperability, data governance, federated learning, HPC workflows, and real-time validation for control applications. The successful candidate will collaborate with European research and industrial partners, including TSOs and DSOs, and work with operational data from the FZJ campus and Living Lab Energy Campus.

Eligibility highlights: applicants should hold an excellent Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, Physics, or a related field. Strong programming skills in Python, Matlab, or C/C++, plus a solid background in machine learning and statistical modelling, are required. English at B2 level or above is expected; German is welcome but not required.

Funding: paid PhD employment under TVöD-Bund Pay Group 13 (75%) with benefits, year-end bonus, capital-forming benefits, 30 days annual leave, and access to training and doctoral development support. The position is initially fixed term for 3.5 years.

Application: apply via the Forschungszentrum Jülich careers portal. The post states that the position is advertised until filled, so candidates should apply as soon as possible.
