About this position
PhD opening at Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e) in the Department of Electrical Engineering for Hardware Architectures for Physics-Informed AI. The project sits at the intersection of electrical engineering, computer science, physics-informed AI, FPGA/ASIC design, and edge deployment.
You will investigate novel hardware architectures for physics-informed AI models, including hybrid model-based and learning-based methods, deep unfolding, model-based learning, physics-informed neural networks, and hardware-software co-design. The work is part of the NWO OTP project Detection of Hidden Cash using Physics-Based AI and includes algorithm development, hardware architecture design, and practical demonstrators such as real-time counterfeit cash detection.
The position is supervised by Prof. Alexios Balatsoukas Stimming at TU/e. The broader research goal is to create design methodologies and accelerators that make physics-informed AI fast, efficient, and deployable in scientific, industrial, and sensing applications.
Eligibility highlights: a master’s degree or equivalent in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Embedded Systems, Computer Science, or a related field; research-oriented mindset; ability to work in an interdisciplinary and industrially connected environment; motivation for teaching and student coaching; fluent English at C1 level; and experience with FPGA/ASIC development, hardware description languages, machine learning, signal processing, AI accelerators, and Python and/or C/C++.
Funding and conditions: full-time employment for four years, with an intermediate assessment after nine months. Salary is scale P (€3,204–€4,051 gross per month full-time), plus 8% holiday allowance and 8.3% year-end bonus.
