About this position

PhD opportunity at the Joint Centre for Disaster Research, Massey University (Wellington), in collaboration with Earth Sciences New Zealand.

The project focuses on next-generation Hybrid Instrument Networks for Earthquake Early Warning (EEW) in Aotearoa New Zealand. The successful candidate will contribute to research on hybrid observatory-grade and low-cost seismic sensor networks, exploring and evaluating novel EEW methods for more resilient, scalable, and affordable warning systems.

This PhD is part of the MBIE Endeavour-funded Next Generation Warning (RCET-NEW) programme, which brings together national and international experts to deliver science solutions tailored to New Zealand’s tectonic and societal setting. The work builds on prior advances in real-time science and earthquake/tsunami rapid characterisation.

Funding is fully covered for 3 years and includes a scholarship of NZ$35,000 per year plus tuition fees. The position is based at Massey University in Wellington.

Applicants should have a strong background in electronics, mechatronics, telecommunications and network engineering, computer engineering/science, geophysics, or related disciplines. Interest in geohazard research, seismic sensing, and early warning technologies would be highly relevant.

Applications close on 31 July 2026, with a planned start date in November 2026. More information and application instructions are available via the provided link.
