About this position

Join Eindhoven University of Technology for a PhD project on hybrid RF and optical wireless networks to optimize wireless services. This research sits within the newly granted Netherlands Growth Fund 6G-FNS (Future Networks and Services) Phase 2 and is carried out in close collaboration with high-tech industry partners.

The project addresses a key challenge for future 6G and beyond networks: making the network adapt intelligently to users and applications instead of forcing users to adapt to network constraints. You will investigate how radio-frequency communication and optical wireless communication can be combined as complementary technologies in a unified hybrid network, with traffic dynamically routed over the most suitable wireless link. The aim is to optimize service delivery in real time for demanding applications such as immersive extended reality, industrial automation, autonomous systems, and AI-enabled devices.

Research topics include adaptive resource allocation, AI-driven network orchestration, dynamic beam steering, joint communication and sensing, and cross-layer optimization. Machine learning will be used to predict traffic demand, user mobility, and network conditions to support autonomous decision-making that improves network performance and user experience.

A distinctive feature of the project is the integration of photonic technologies into future wireless infrastructures. You will explore how photonic integrated circuits can support scalable and energy-efficient signal generation, beamforming, distribution, and control in hybrid RF–OWC systems. The project combines analytical modelling, system simulation, photonic integrated circuit design, machine learning, and experimental validation using advanced communication testbeds.

The position is based in the Department of Electrical Engineering at TU/e in Eindhoven, The Netherlands. The university offers a dynamic international environment, strong links with high-tech industry, and excellent facilities on its green campus in Brainport Eindhoven. The post is a full-time PhD position for four years, with an intermediate assessment after nine months. Salary is in Dutch university scale P, with additional benefits including a year-end bonus, vacation pay, pension arrangements, parental leave provisions, training opportunities, sports facilities, commuting/work-from-home support, and immigration support for international candidates.

Eligibility highlights include a master’s degree in electrical engineering, applied physics, or a related area; strong interest in optical and wireless communications; laboratory and programming experience; and English proficiency at C1 level. Applications are accepted online until 2026-08-14.
