About this position
Amsterdam UMC is advertising a PhD position within the EU-funded MERIT (MEtabolic Reprogramming in viral pathogenesis: from Infection to Therapeutic innovations) training programme. The project is based at Amsterdam UMC, location AMC, Netherlands, and focuses on implementation science, biosafety, biosecurity, virus research, behavioural science, and mixed methods research.
The doctoral project (Work Package 2) aims to bridge the gap between biosafety guidelines and everyday laboratory practice by identifying behavioural, social, and organisational determinants of compliance with safety measures. The research will use literature reviews, interviews, questionnaires, discrete choice experiments or vignettes, and observations to understand barriers and drivers of safety behaviour, then translate findings into tailored implementation strategies for real-world laboratory settings.
You will work closely with laboratory staff, doctoral candidates, and supervisors to select, tailor, pilot, and evaluate implementation strategies across multiple EU institutions. The project emphasizes feasibility, acceptability, appropriateness, and improved compliance with biosafety practice, with the broader goal of strengthening research quality and public trust in high-risk pathogen research.
Supervision is provided by Dr. Rosa van Mansfeld, Dr. Mireille Dekker, and Dr. Adithya Sridhar. The wider MERIT network includes 7 academic institutions and 12 associated partners across Europe, with planned secondments in Poland, Innsbruck, and Sweden.
Eligibility highlights include a Master's degree in biomedical sciences, health sciences, or a related field, strong interest in qualitative and quantitative research and data analysis, excellent English communication skills (minimum C1/C2 CEFR), and compliance with the MSCA transnational mobility rule. The contract is for 4 years at 36 hours per week, with a gross salary of €3,217 to €4,077 per month plus an end-of-year bonus and travel reimbursements.
Application deadline: 30 October 2026. Apply through the MERIT doctoral candidate vacancy page.
