About this position

PhD opportunity at the University of St Andrews in native oyster hatchery production, aquaculture, restoration, marine biology, ecology, genetics, cell biology, and zoology.

This EASTBIO-funded PhD project focuses on improving hatchery production of the native oyster Ostrea edulis, an ecologically important species in decline across its range. The project is based at the Scottish Oceans Institute, University of St Andrews, with co-supervision from Dr Carmel McDougall and Dr Tim Bean, and industry collaboration with Native Aqua Ltd.

Research will begin with experimental work in the Scottish Ocean Institute aquarium facility to explore methods for manipulating oyster sex and optimising broodstock sex ratios to maximise production. Depending on the candidate’s interests, the project may also involve improving hatchery workflows for larval production, investigating parentage and genetics effects on oyster performance, or exploring the evolution of larval brooding in oysters. The student will also visit Dr Tim Bean’s group at the Roslin Institute for additional training.

The PhD includes a professional internship with NativeAqua lasting between 3 and 18 months within the 4-year funded period. Funding covers a UKRI-standard stipend and UK tuition fees, with the university covering the Home-International fee difference. The project is open to UK and international students.

Applicants should apply through the University of St Andrews portal, complete the EASTBIO forms, and provide academic qualifications, English language evidence if applicable, and two references. Queries about the project should go to the supervisors; application queries go to Rachel Horn at [email protected].
