About this position
BCAM (Basque Center for Applied Mathematics) is recruiting a PhD student for the MSCA Doctoral Network e-ChemIn (DC5): In-silico reconstruction of solid-liquid and solid-solid electrochemical interfaces at the nanoscale. The position is based in Bilbao, Spain, with PhD enrolment at the University of the Basque Country (EHU) and research activities carried out at BCAM.
The project sits at the intersection of Physics, Chemistry, Computer Science, and Materials Science, focusing on inverse modelling, optimization, atomistic simulations, Bayesian sampling, and open-source code development. The research aims to reconstruct complex electrochemical interfaces using spectroscopy and microscopy data (including XPS, SAX, SXRD, EELS, TEM, and NMR) to study energy storage and conversion devices such as Na-ion batteries and catalytic systems for water oxidation.
Supervision is led by Elena Akhmatskaya (BCAM) with co-supervision by Amaia Saracibar (EHU), and advisory support from M.R. Bonilla (BCAM). Secondment supervisors include S. Dvinskikh (KTH Royal Institute of Technology) and J. Carrasco (CIC energiGUNE), with planned secondments at Leibniz Institute for New Materials, CIC energiGUNE, and KTH.
Eligibility requires that applicants do not already hold a doctoral degree and have not spent more than 12 months in Spain during the 36 months before recruitment. A master’s degree or equivalent in Applied Mathematics, Physics, Computational Chemistry, or a closely related field is required. Strong English skills are mandatory; experience with Molecular Dynamics, Monte Carlo methods, free energy methods, Bayesian inference, data science, machine learning, and programming in C++, Python, and/or Julia is highly desirable.
