About this position
PhD opportunity at the Catalan Institute of Nanoscience and Nanotechnology (ICN2), Spain
The Inorganic Nanoparticles Group, led by Dr. Neus G. Bastús, is recruiting a Doctoral Student to work on inorganic nanoparticles, materials chemistry, and AI-assisted materials discovery within the MAIAMI project.
The project focuses on the controlled wet-chemistry synthesis of advanced inorganic nanoparticles, especially high-entropy alloy (HEA) and multimetallic systems for energy-related applications. The PhD will combine scalable and environmentally benign synthesis routes with advanced structural and compositional characterization to connect synthesis parameters, nanostructure, and functional performance.
A major part of the work involves documenting experimental procedures and results in a FAIR-compliant materials database, including synthesis protocols, characterization data, and SSbD indicators, to support AI-driven optimization workflows and reproducible materials discovery.
Training and research activities include wet-chemistry nanoparticle synthesis, UV-Vis spectroscopy, XRD, XPS, electron microscopy, data curation, and collaboration with materials chemistry, data science, and energy application partners. The environment is highly interdisciplinary and includes access to state-of-the-art ICN2 facilities.
Eligibility highlights: a Master's degree in Materials Science, Chemistry, Nanoscience, or a related field; strong inorganic chemistry and colloidal synthesis background; experience with nanoparticle synthesis/characterization is desirable; familiarity with XPS, TEM, aqueous-phase synthesis, surface functionalization, or machine learning is advantageous.
Conditions: full-time PhD contract (37.5 h/week), temporary position, salary depending on qualifications and experience, relocation support, life insurance, flexible schedules, 28 holidays per year, and training activities.
How to apply: submit your application via the ICN2 website with a cover letter, full CV with contact details, and 2 reference letters or referee contacts. Applications are reviewed continuously.
