About this position
PhD opportunity at Murdoch University, Perth, Australia in Integrated Copper Flowsheet — Techno-Economic Analysis and Life Cycle Assessment.
This funded PhD sits within a broader ARC-supported, industry-linked copper research program in partnership with BHP. The project focuses on chemical engineering, process engineering, techno-economic analysis, life cycle assessment, industrial ecology, and sustainable resources.
You will develop and assess candidate copper concentrate processing flowsheets, build mass and energy balances, estimate capital and operating costs, quantify life-cycle emissions, compare energy scenarios, and evaluate how ore and concentrate variability affects economics, environmental performance, and risk. The work combines literature, industry, and independently developed datasets, with potential incorporation of experimental data from the wider program.
The scholarship is fully funded and includes a tax-free living stipend of AUD $37,000 per year for three years, with a possible six-month extension. Tuition fees are fully covered, and international students receive a tuition fee waiver valued at about AUD $44,000 per year for up to four years. The project also provides research funding for equipment, consumables, analytical work, conference travel, and travel to major national facilities.
Applicants should have a relevant background in chemical, process, or environmental engineering, industrial ecology, energy systems, or sustainability science. A First Class Honours degree, a research-intensive Master's degree, or equivalent is expected, along with strong research potential and good communication skills. Experience with process simulation, LCA software, or Python/MATLAB/R is a plus.
To apply, email Dr Xiangpeng Gao with your CV, transcripts, and an English test report if available, plus a cover letter explaining your interest and how you would approach the open research question. Deadline: 31 August 2026. Commencement is as soon as practicable, subject to admission and visa requirements.
