About this position

PhD opening in landscape evolution, glacial erosion, geomorphology, glaciology, and earth surface dynamics at the University of Lausanne (Institute of Earth Surface Dynamics, IDyST; Interactions between Climate and Earth surface processes research group, ICE).

The project is part of an SNSF-funded study, “(How) Do glaciers buzz saw?”, and investigates how glaciers shape mountain topography in the Patagonian Andes. The doctoral researcher will use electron spin resonance (ESR) dating together with numerical modelling (including IGM and Pecube) to quantify the timing and rates of glacial erosion and topographic change.

The position is a 4-year PhD with 100% employment. The successful candidate will be jointly supervised by Prof. Georgina King and Dr. Maxime Bernard and will join a diverse, international team working on geochronology, landscape evolution, and Quaternary glaciation.

Desired background includes a Master’s degree in geography, geology, or earth science; experience with trapped-charge dating (ESR or luminescence) and/or numerical modelling; good English; and an interest in geomorphology, landscape evolution, and glaciology. Fieldwork experience is helpful but not required.

Applications must be submitted via the University of Lausanne hiring platform Success Factors. The deadline is 2026-08-23. Applicants should provide a motivation letter, CV, degree certificates, transcripts, one research output example, and contact details for two referees.
