About this position
University of Southampton postgraduate research project: Laser-based fabrication of microfluidic devices for clinical diagnostic testing.
This is a fully funded PhD opportunity (UK only) in the Faculty of Engineering and Physical Sciences / School of Optoelectronics (ORC). The project focuses on microfluidics, laser-based direct-write fabrication, paper-based diagnostic devices, and clinical diagnostic testing. The research aims to create affordable, user-friendly point-of-care tests for settings such as hospitals, care homes, ambulances, and home use.
The project uses a patented laser-based manufacturing technique to pattern fluid flow paths in paper and other porous materials. Combined with biochemical assays, this approach can enable multiplexing, semi-quantification, and improved sensitivity in diagnostic sensors. Example application areas mentioned include tuberculosis, sepsis, cytokine storm, and urinary tract infections.
This is a highly multidisciplinary project spanning laser physics/engineering, microfluidics, biochemistry, and medicine, with collaboration involving clinical researchers and work across different laboratories and locations in the UK and beyond. The project is mainly experimentally oriented and includes opportunities for interdisciplinary training and outreach.
Entry requirements: a 2:1 honours degree. The post welcomes enthusiastic applicants who are keen to learn across disciplines and work effectively as part of a team.
Funding: fully funded for UK applicants only.
Deadline: 30 September 2027.
Funding details
Fully funded for UK only.
What's required
Applicants should have a 2:1 honours degree. The project seeks enthusiastic candidates willing to learn across disciplines, work experimentally, and contribute as a team player. Interest in laser physics/engineering, microfluidics, biochemistry, and medicine is relevant, and the project is highly multidisciplinary.
